Warrington Recognised for Leading Northern Prosperity in New Centre for Cities Report

A new Centre for Cities report highlights Warrington as a northern success story, with the town’s strong economic performance acting as a springboard for growth across the wider Cheshire and Warrington region. According to the report, Warrington’s economic output, wages, and disposable income in the area are now well above many similar towns and boroughs in the North of England.

The report details how, since 2013, Warrington’s real economic output has grown by 41 per cent, one of the fastest rates in the North of England. The report emphasises the ingredients needed for prosperity in towns and urban areas, that are in abundant supply across Cheshire and Warrington, such as:

-                a knowledge-intensive economy
-                nationally significant employment sites
-                excellent connectivity
-                proactive planning.

Warrington has excelled across all four areas, providing a model for other towns and urban regions looking to raise living standards and strengthen local economies.
And with the establishment of the Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority and the election of a new regional Mayor in May 2027 there will be new opportunities and investment to further harness these strengths, fuelling initiatives that deliver new opportunities for businesses and residents across the region.

Cllr Louise Gittins, Chair of the Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority Shadow Board said:

“Warrington’s success reflects our whole region’s strong foundations.
This report is a real endorsement of our long-term approach to growth. It reflects the hard work of our businesses, communities, and partners, and it also shows the strength and potential of the wider Cheshire and Warrington area as we work together through the Combined Authority to deliver on our ambition to become one of the UK’s fastest-growing areas by 2045."

Steve Purdham, Chair of the Cheshire and Warrington Business and Advisory Board said:

“Our economy is powered by a remarkable combination of sectors; from world-class life sciences and global companies like AstraZeneca, to pioneering energy initiatives such as HyNet. This innovative, ambitious business community is driving growth not only in Warrington but across the wider region.”
The findings underline Cheshire and Warrington’s position as a regional leader, showing how sustained local action, strategic planning, and investment in residents can drive measurable improvements in income and opportunity across all our communities.
